Matthew 9:12, 13
(12) But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. (13) But go and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
To get the proper context, we must understand what is going on here. In the previous verses, the Pharisees are questioning the disciples on why Jesus: “eateth with publicans and sinners”. (Praise God He still does) There are MANY thoughts and lessons to be drawn from this passage, but I want to focus on the main one – Christ seeking sinners…
This should be the church’s entire mission – seeking the lost! As we see many “churches” popping up all over the place, when you look inward, they are no more than glorified country clubs, entertainment centers and coffee houses – NOT “houses of prayer”. But, lets not lose focus here. (the lost) Christ began His Ministry back in Chapter 4 of this same book preaching repentance. Yes, this principle has its place even in the born again, but His mission was primarily on seeking and saving the lost. Now, we can’t “save” them, that’s His job. But, we are commanded to SEEK them (Matthew 28:19). This is where the modern church is erring. Its lost its focus. It simply wants to bring in the “good people”. The: “churched, decent clothes wearing, shiny members of society” based off of popularity in many cases. Things/priorities couldn’t be more WRONG! We, as the church need to be seeking those who need the Savior. Those who need help. We need to humble ourselves and be seeking those who aren’t too proud to admit they need saving. Yes, we need to edify the saints, etc, but we should NEVER lose our focus – the lost!
** And on a side note, we need to be seeking those who the modern church isn’t willing to allow to be used simply because of past mistakes. (Insert any sin, here but divorce always seems to be at or near the top of the list) If the Blood of Christ isn’t sufficient to cleanse from ALL sins, then we are all in trouble….. Everyone has a “past”, but if Christ doesn’t hold it against them, who are we to? People with a past can be very productive for the church. In fact, they can usually do more for the glory of God because of it. (So long as they have repented and are willing to work despite what the “Fundamentalists” say) They are/can be living proof of what God can do, and the fact the He never throws His clay away…..
